At first glance, Spoon by Spoon is a celebration of the simple wooden spoon. Hand carved from storm felled and urban tree removals (or, if I’m really lucky, fruit trees after pruning), the whole process is a call to slow down. To pay attention. To look at a piece of fallen timber and see the possibility of what can be.


But really, the seeing what can be part is the bigger celebration. It’s certainly the most life-giving part of the process for me. On the proximate level, my attention is drawn to the possible form that the particular piece of timber suggests, but ultimately, I gravitate to thoughts of how life can be lived differently. Maybe it’s the fond memories of large wooden ladles of warm soup that were passed around one of my favorite tables in Madison, Wisconsin, but I tend to associate hand carved spoons with community and caring. With living life more slowly and intentionally, and with building one another up.
